A deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has left a community grieving after three children and a teacher were killed in an attack on October 15.
Police said the incident began shortly before 1 p.m. when authorities received a report of a person firing at a vehicle before entering the elementary school. Emergency dispatchers subsequently received multiple calls reporting an active shooter inside the building.
Investigators said the gunman forced his way into the school by firing through locked doors before opening fire inside a classroom serving students with special needs.
Victims Include Three Children and a Teacher
Authorities confirmed that three boys, aged 5, 8 and 11, died alongside a teacher. The teacher was identified as 25-year-old Megan Lambert, while one of the children was identified as 5-year-old Rhoam Summer. The families of the other two children requested that their names remain private.
Two additional people—a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher—were wounded and taken to hospital. The shooting left families, educators and residents struggling to understand the violence that had struck their community.
Suspect Identified by Police
Police identified the suspected gunman as Griffin J. John II, a 16-year-old who had previously attended Silver Rail Elementary School. Authorities said he was no longer enrolled in the school district.
According to investigators, the teenager entered the school carrying a shotgun. The motive for the attack has not been established publicly, and investigators continue examining the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
Community Member Intervenes
Police said a 36-year-old community member who witnessed the suspect’s actions followed him into the school and fatally shot him, bringing the attack to an end.
Authorities also described how a teacher confronted the gunman and attempted to stop him. The actions of those who intervened have drawn attention as investigators assess how the shooting unfolded and whether further loss of life was prevented.
The incident prompted a major emergency response involving local police and other agencies. Students and staff were evacuated and reunited with their families at a nearby location.
