A youth soccer gathering in Wichita turned into a deadly tragedy after a pickup truck drove onto a soccer field at the Stryker Sports Complex, killing a 6-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man and leaving several other people injured.
The collision occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, as families gathered at the sports complex in northeast Wichita to watch youth soccer games. Emergency dispatchers received multiple calls reporting that a vehicle had entered the playing area and struck people on the field.
Police identified the victims as Cole Adrian, 6, and Nicholas Schafer, 35, both residents of McPherson, Kansas. Authorities said the two victims were not related and were pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident prompted a large emergency response, with police officers, firefighters and medical personnel arriving to assist victims and secure the area.
Ten People Injured in the Collision
Authorities reported that 10 additional people suffered traumatic injuries after the pickup entered the field. Those injured ranged in age from 5 to 68, and several children were among the victims.
The injured were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment. Police described their injuries as noncritical in the initial updates, although the incident caused significant distress among those present.
Another 61-year-old woman was taken to a hospital after experiencing a separate medical complication unrelated to traumatic injuries from the collision, bringing the total number of people transported to hospitals to 11.
Witnesses and bystanders began helping injured people before emergency responders arrived. Their efforts included providing immediate assistance and helping people move away from the scene.
What Led to the Accident?
According to the preliminary police investigation, the Chevrolet pickup had been parked in a space near the soccer fields before it drove onto one of the fields and struck multiple people.
The driver was identified by police as a 34-year-old woman from Garden City, Kansas. Two children were inside the vehicle at the time, and another of her children was participating in a soccer game on a separate field at the complex.
The driver initially was taken into custody for questioning. Police later released her pending the results of toxicology testing and a mechanical examination of the vehicle.
As of October 19, authorities had not announced criminal charges or determined whether the incident was intentional. Investigators were working to establish what caused the truck to enter the playing area.
Police said investigators had interviewed more than 30 witnesses, including the driver and the two juveniles who were inside the pickup. Authorities also requested photographs and video recordings that could help reconstruct the incident.
Soccer Community Left Grieving
The tragedy has deeply affected families and members of the Wichita community. What began as an ordinary afternoon of youth sports ended in the deaths of two people and injuries to others, including children.
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu expressed condolences to the victims and their families, describing the incident as heartbreaking. Police Chief Joe Sullivan also acknowledged the profound loss and praised bystanders who rushed to help those injured.
The Stryker Sports Complex canceled events following the incident while authorities investigated. The cancellations disrupted scheduled activities as the community focused on the victims and their families.
Investigation Continues
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Toxicology testing, the mechanical inspection of the pickup and witness interviews are expected to help investigators determine what happened before the vehicle entered the field.
Authorities have emphasized that the motive and precise cause remain undetermined. The driver’s release does not establish responsibility or resolve the questions surrounding the crash.
Anyone with photographs, videos or other information about the incident is encouraged to share it with the Wichita Police Department.
