Senatobia Walmart Shooting: Toddler’s Death Sparks Calls for Accountability After Officer Cleared

The death of a one-year-old child during a police shooting outside a Walmart Supercenter in Senatobia, Mississippi, continues to draw public attention after state authorities concluded that the officer involved was justified in using deadly force.

The incident, which occurred on June 14, 2026, claimed the life of Kohen Wiley, a toddler whose death has left his family grieving and raised difficult questions about the circumstances surrounding the encounter.

The shooting took place in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter on U.S. Highway 51. Officers had reportedly responded to a shoplifting complaint involving baby clothes and diapers when the situation escalated into a confrontation involving a vehicle.

According to the law enforcement account, officers attempted to stop the vehicle as it was leaving the area. Authorities said the driver moved toward officers, nearly striking one of them, prompting an officer to open fire. Kohen was struck during the shooting and later died. An adult in the vehicle was also seriously injured.

However, the account has been disputed by Kohen’s mother, Vellesiya Wiley, who denied that she and her companion had stolen anything. The family has questioned the official explanation of the incident and called for greater transparency regarding the events that led to the shooting.

Attorney General Announces Decision

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch announced on October 19 that her office had completed its review of the incident and determined that the officer’s use of deadly force was legally justified.

The decision meant the officer would not face criminal prosecution based on the state’s review. However, the conclusion has not resolved all the questions raised by Kohen’s family and members of the public.

The family has continued to seek answers about the encounter, including what happened in the moments before the officer fired. Calls for the release of additional video evidence have also formed part of the wider debate surrounding the case.

Family Continues to Seek Answers

For Kohen’s relatives, the loss of a child remains the most painful consequence of the incident. The circumstances of his death have prompted renewed calls for accountability and a clearer public explanation of the decisions made during the police response.

Community members have also expressed concern about how an encounter involving an alleged shoplifting complaint escalated into a fatal shooting involving a toddler.

The disagreement between the family’s account and the official explanation has kept attention focused on the available evidence and the need for transparency in cases involving deadly force.

Questions Remain After the Review

Although the attorney general has concluded that the officer acted lawfully, the decision has not erased the grief experienced by Kohen’s family or ended public discussion of the shooting.

The case highlights the serious consequences that can follow rapidly escalating encounters between law enforcement officers and civilians. It also underscores the importance of clear communication, thorough investigations and public confidence in the process used to review fatal police shootings.

As the family continues to mourn Kohen, the incident remains a painful reminder of a young life lost and the lasting questions that can follow a fatal encounter with law enforcement.
