DC Shooting Last Night: National Guard Member Wounded in Southeast Washington as Multiple Overnight Shootings Leave One Dead

A National Guard member was shot and wounded during a confrontation in Southeast Washington late Sunday night, while a series of separate shootings across the nation’s capital left one person dead and several others injured over the weekend.

The incidents prompted multiple police investigations as authorities worked to establish the circumstances behind the gun violence, identify suspects and determine whether any of the shootings were connected.

The latest National Guard-related shooting occurred at approximately 11:10 p.m. Sunday in the 400 block of 8th Street SE, according to police.

National Guard Member Shot During Street Fight

According to interim D.C. Police Chief Jeffery Carroll, National Guard members were monitoring a group of people when a fight broke out nearby.

The guardsmen reportedly left their vehicle to intervene. During the confrontation, one person allegedly produced a firearm and pointed it toward the service members after being ordered to put the weapon down.

Three National Guard members then opened fire, striking the armed individual in the abdomen, police said.

One guardsman was shot in the leg during the incident. Both the injured service member and the suspected shooter were transported to hospitals with injuries described by authorities as non-life-threatening.

Police said investigators were examining the circumstances surrounding the exchange of gunfire. No continuing threat to the public was reported in the initial updates.

Separate Shootings Leave One Person Dead

The National Guard incident occurred amid several other shootings reported across Washington over the weekend.

In Northwest D.C., a shooting near Connecticut Avenue and Dupont Circle early Sunday left one man dead and two other people injured. Police responded to the area at approximately 3 a.m. and found two men and a woman suffering from gunshot wounds.

One of the men was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other man and the woman were taken to hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Investigators were searching for suspects, and the motive had not been publicly established in the initial reports.

Gunfire Reported Near Howard University

Two additional shootings were reported late Saturday night near Howard University during the university’s homecoming weekend.

At approximately 11:27 p.m., police investigated a shooting in the 700 block of V Street NW. A juvenile male later arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound that was not considered life-threatening.

About 25 minutes later, officers responded to the 900 block of Florida Avenue NW, where they found three people suffering from gunshot wounds: two juvenile males and one adult male.

All three were transported to local hospitals with injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Police had not confirmed whether the two shootings were connected or whether any of the victims were associated with Howard University.

Police Investigations Continue

The separate incidents have placed D.C. law enforcement agencies under pressure to identify those responsible and determine what led to the violence.

In the National Guard case, police said the Internal Affairs and Criminal Investigation divisions were involved in examining the circumstances of the shooting.

Investigators are also pursuing leads in the fatal shooting near Dupont Circle and the incidents near Howard University. Authorities have not established a connection between these cases.

Police have asked anyone with relevant information to contact the Metropolitan Police Department.

Community Awaits Further Details

The shootings have raised fresh concerns about public safety in Washington, particularly as residents and visitors gathered for homecoming celebrations and other weekend activities.

Officials have not announced a common motive linking the incidents, and the investigations remain separate unless evidence establishes otherwise.

As of Monday, October 19, the National Guard member and the alleged shooter were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries. One person was confirmed dead in a separate Northwest D.C. shooting, while several other victims were being treated for gunshot wounds.

Authorities are expected to release further information as the investigations progress.
